Even as the two monsters dropped dead, Merrell was already casting one of the spells she must have just gotten upon hitting Level 4, since Nate had never seen it before. She raised her staff and sent a shower of iridescent sparks flying from its tip to land upon the eyes of the three remaining Sahu Scroungers.

The monsters shrieked in confusion, dropped their weapons, and started pawing at their faces.

Balan leapt into their midst. He crushed a Sahu Scrounger’s skull with the hammer-end of his weapon, before swinging his polearm around and lancing its bladed end through the chest of another monster.

The War Monk tore his weapon free and struck again, but he wasn’t quick enough to prevent the last Sahu Scrounger from unleashing a piercing shriek that caused a large circle of bubbles to rise from the depths of the river.

The monster used one of its Skills, Nate realized, as Balan sliced the Sahu Scrounger open from collar to hip with a mighty sweep of his polearm. He adjusted his aim, about to send a hail of Mana Bullets into the bubbles, but a better idea occurred to him, and he beckoned to Balan instead. “Get back here!”

The War Monk must have sensed his thoughts, as he withdrew immediately and took up a protective stance in front of Merrell and Nate.

Another six Sahu Scroungers emerged from the river. Another type of monster accompanied them. It was quadruped, with a fang-filled snout, a scaly torso as long as Nate was tall and twice as wide, and forelimbs tipped with sickle-like claws.
