Mira awoke to Tish shaking her. Her face was alive with panic.

“Come on Mira, we have to get to the upper levels. Xander told me to pack my essentials and meet him topside. Things must be bad.”

Mira processed the information.

“Huh? What? You’re leaving?”

Tish threw several items into a backpack, including an ornate copy of the Verani Creed. She scanned her bookshelf and pulled several volumes off and packed them alongside it.

“I guess, maybe. I don’t know. He said the Trade Guild is moving against us.” She scanned the apartment as if ticking off a list or maybe saying goodbye. “He always said it might come to this.”

Tish opened a cupboard and removed a small hand pistol, a Heckler and Koch 100 watt energy weapon. She slipped it into her pack.

“Do you need me to carry anything?” Mira asked.

Tish shook her head.

“Most of my stuff is on the Nemesis. Come on,” she said, heading for the door.

Mira followed Tish into a corridor. Tish led the way toward a T-junction. Two armed security personnel rounded the corner and blocked their passage.

“Get out of the way,” Tish said.

Mira sized them up. They were in partial armour which protected key areas, but left others exposed. Their hands hovered close to their weapons.

“Tish, I need you to come with us,” the first said, his name badge read Harman. He looked at Mira. “You are free to go about your business, Miss. I suggest you consider leaving the station.”

He leered at Tish. “Your standards are falling. Are you fucking freaks now?”

The second man sniggered like a twelve-year-old boy standing tall alongside the playground bully. Mira had heard worse over the years. She controlled her breathing and kept her expression neutral.

“Okay, I don’t want any trouble,” she said, stepping forward. She moved between the guards and stared at Harman. When his eyes locked to hers she drove her hand forward and grabbed his balls, squeezing them as hard as she could. The guard’s eyes bulged and his face turned purple, he dropped to his knees, struggling for breath. Mira kicked him in the side of the head, knocking him unconscious.

Tish pushed the second guard into the wall with her shoulder before kicking his feet from under him. She punched down on his windpipe. There was a brutal pop and the man clawed at his throat for breath.

“One of the more useful things I picked up on the streets. You fight dirty, Mira Thorn. You’ll make a good Blade,” she said. “Let’s go!”

They raced through the corridors of the station. Tish stopped at a door in the bulkhead marked ‘Maintenance Personnel Only’. She punched a code into the lock and pushed the door open.

Mira found herself in a narrow, dark stairwell. She shivered in the damp cold air. The sound of dripping water echoed off wet walls.

“This is part of the old ventilation system. No one comes in here. It’s the safest way up,” Tish said. “I hope you’re fit.”

They began the ascent. Their boots clanged on each step as they ran.
