Of course, some commentators are of the opinion that Nagin knew exactly what he was saying, and to whom—black voters. There is something about a tragedy like Katrina that brings class and race insensitivity—not to mention warfare—to the surface. Barbara Bush's comment about the poor folk never having had it better than when living in the Astrodome set loose a tempest. She was accused of being an insensitive, patronizing elitist. It's certainly hard to argue with that, but if some Astrodome residents had told a CNN reporter that they'd never slept in an air-conditioned place before and it was a real treat, the story probably wouldn't have lasted beyond a single news cycle.
