Chapter 26

The Wasteland Gave, and the Wasteland Hath Taken Away

In the twilight, the commander stood before the burning greenhouse. Lucius watched the transparent plastic shrivel and pop, exposing a firestorm of crops within. Purple and blue embers danced into the air. Beside the commander, half-lit by the eerie flames, the professor was on his knees. Far beyond, beneath a cloud of black smoke, the jungle burned, its interior turned into a raging inferno that would doubtlessly follow through on the commander’s promise and consume the hotel complex.

The army was moving the tanks out from under the trees, if only to escape the exodus of yellow howler monkeys now collecting along the beach. Some of the soldiers took pot-shots at the monkeys. In the dead air, the gunshots, and the monkey’s anguished howls, carried easily across the salt.

With his hands on his hips, the commander turned on his heels, and Lucius watched him pace back and forth, the flames glinting on his tattooed biceps. The thick vein on his forehead bulged.

The commander turned to the professor.

“Ya know, this just won’t do. It seems those stones ‘ave flown away with the birds. Now, I could take my army on a wild goose chase to track ‘em down, but that’d take time an’ resources. Things that frankly I’m running out of. So, I’m thinkin’, an’ I want ya to think real hard about this professor, but I’m just thinkin’, is there anything you could put in that rocket a’ yours that might just ‘ave the same effect?”

The professor swallowed, sweat dripping from his chin. “I… I’ve actually given that matter some thought. And… have you considered going straight to the source?”

The commander rolled his jaw. “The source?”

“Well, y… y… yes.”

“But if we go there, what about refinement? I wasn’t born yesterday, professor.”

“Of course, but you see, I have a method. All those charts on my bedroom walls. All these years, it’s what I’ve been working on. It was a riddle you see, and, well, I’ve solved it.”

The commander ran his palm across his jaw. A grin spread across his lips. “The source, ehh. And that’s two birds, one stone. Why professor, you sadistic bastard.”
