She wasn’t where she had been.

She wasn’t where she was going.

But she was on her way.

~ Jodi Hills

It’s mid-afternoon when we pass a royal blue road sign that says Tucumcari on the top line. Well, it actually says ucumcari. The T is torn off. A list of amenities for travelers is indicated in a sort of twelve-days-of-Christmas style underneath the city name.

“Thirty Modern Stations, twenty-four restaurants, fourteen hotels …” Ben reads aloud as we pass. “What are modern stations?”

“I don’t know. But we need to find out,” Cam answers from the back.

“Are we stopping here?” Ben asks.

“I need to go,” Madeline says. “It’s time for a pit stop.”

Every time she says, “pit stop,” she uses the accent of this character from the Cars movie who was Italian, so it comes out “peeeet stope.”

“Tucumcari!” I shout.

“We’ve established that, Rye,” Ben answers.

“No! You guys. I thought we’d be here at night one night. I wanted to stay here. There are some of the best neon signs on all of Route 66 in this town.”

“Here? Are you sure?”

“Yes! I wanted to stay at the Roadrunner Lodge Motel!”

“What’s special about the Roadrunner Motel?” Ben asks.

“They have everything restored like it’s back in the sixties. And … wait for it …” I pause for dramatic effect. “They have Magic Fingers beds!”

“What?” Madeline asks.

“Oh my gosh! Tell me you know what Magic Fingers beds are. Don’t let me down, Mads.”

“Um. No. Are they shaped like a hand, like those cool chairs from back then?”

“No, silly. They’re beds that vibrate. You put a coin in this box at the side of the bed, and the whole mattress shakes. It’s so cool.”

“Does it shake all night?”

“No. I think like a minute or something.”

I look back at Cam. He’s smiling at me, again. He’s been so much more smiley ever since our talk. On one hand, I’m grateful to see the weight lifting. On the other hand, it’s making my goal of resisting him so much harder. He’s attractive no matter what, but Cam giving me private glances in the rearview mirror and smiling like that? Well. He could cause a ten-car pile up.

“I’m a little bummed we aren’t going to get to stay there,” I admit.

Madeline starts rattling off directions to me. I’m at her mercy today. It's been good so far. She hasn’t really had a lot of great options as to where to stop. There’s a lot of highway surrounded by open land with chaparral and scrub plants for miles and miles through this stretch of Route 66. There haven’t even been distant cliffs along the horizon for the most part. Though, there’s a mesa off in the distance now. Just one.

We drive through Tucumcari on Old Route 66, which takes us past vintage motels and gas stations. Some are closed for good, left where time abandoned them, a neglected memory of what they were. Others are revitalized, but maintain the 1960s feel. We come up to the Roadrunner Inn.

“Stop here,” Madeline says.

“Why?” I ask.

I pull into the parking lot anyway.
