While never living in the United States, Legorreta, like Le Corbusier, had a profound impact on architectural development in America. Legorreta introduced Mexican modernism to a global audience and brought his crisp, brightly colored aesthetic to the American Southwest. His work featured the clean lines and spare forms of modern design while incorporating elements of Mexican vernacular architecture, such as protective walls, spacious courtyards, and bold colors.

He is perhaps best known for his Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City (1965) and his purple tower in Pershing Square, Los Angeles (1994). More recently he designed a large dormitory complex, the Max Palevsky Commons (2001), at the University of Chicago. Here his bold colors and stark shapes stand apart from the somber Collegiate Gothic–style buildings that surround it. The relative liveliness of his project has made it a favorite of the undergraduates who live there.

His remains are buried in a niche within a large family mausoleum. He is remembered with a small plaque bearing his name and dates.

Pierre L’Enfant (1754–1852)

Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia
