Mark stepped out of the RV and waited for Lisa. Luckily, the night had been quiet and uneventful for them, but he knew there was at least one other freak rot-bag wandering close by that needed to be taken out before it managed to sneak up on them. The door opened and Lisa stepped out with her MP5 in hand. She told Mark that she wanted something with a little more punch than the 90 grain bullet the MK-16 had if they should find it, and especially if there was more than one.

Just like yesterday, Mark gave Tami the pistol and some extra magazines. However, today he gave Logan an old Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun and a box of .00 buck shells just in case more decided to show up. Logan assured them not to worry; if more did appear while they were gone hunting, he knew they could handle them.

Before they headed back into the mountains, Mark and Lisa went out a hundred yards and checked the area around the RV. They followed their path from the day before as they made their way to the top. This time when they started down the other side, they went off in a different direction. The last thing Lisa wanted was to run into another rot-bag like yesterday’s. There was no doubt in her mind that it had won first prize in the fugliest-of-all-time contest. It even put the freak she saw in the hotel stairwell a year ago to shame.

Every couple hundred yards they would stop and listen. They followed the ridge and eventually came to a spring. Mark figured this was a good place to wait and catch some game coming to get a drink of fresh water. They found some bushes downwind and waited. It only took about twenty minutes for them to hear something approaching.

They both raised their rifles and waited. Lisa felt every muscle in her body start to tighten as time seemed to slow down around her. Mark noticed that her index finger kept nervously raising and wanting to move to the trigger. He reached over with his left hand and set it on her thigh. She looked over at him and he lipped the words, “It’ll be okay, just be patient.”

She relaxed slightly and gave him a little nod, then looked through her optical sight toward the rustling in the bushes. They listened and watched as it drew closer, then Lisa placed her finger on the trigger. The bushes separated and a wild goat emerged. Lisa pulled the trigger and her rifle fired. Not realizing she had accidentally set it on full auto, she pumped almost twenty rounds into its side before she let up on the trigger.

Slowly turning her head toward Mark, she saw him staring back at her in amazement. He asked, “Do you think you killed it dead enough?” and he let out a chuckle as they stood up and went over to it.

Lisa was a little embarrassed. “Ummmm… sorry.” She smiled sheepishly as she explained, “I was a little nervous because of yesterday.
