The Smith brothers saw Hickle reverse out of the driveway and race off down the highway before the frost melted off his windshield. They were surprised to see another car on the street. Typically, the roads were deserted. They watched as the red glow of brake lights glowed momentarily. They didn’t want a fight but if it came down to it, they’d take no prisoners and lose not a single night’s sleep over it. They stopped in the street and waited to see if the vehicle would come back or go on. After a hesitation, the vehicle slowly rolled out of sight. With a collective sigh, the trio went to work.

Whatever reason Earl had to burn this house down was none of their business. It was simply to do the job and get the pay. They’d drained some old hydraulic oil and diesel out of a dead backhoe. It would take a little coaxing to get it started but it would burn nicely once it caught. The three of them forced their way inside and doused the carpet, couch, plush chairs, thick lined drapes, and bed mattress. To help with airflow, they opened the windows and attic access. The place was already picked over pretty good. Nothing of any value remained in the house except for a FEMA box, which they took, discarding a bag of microwave popcorn. What a cruel joke, no power and little food then give people microwave popcorn in their FEMA boxes. The Smith brothers had a good laugh about it and tossed it aside. They hopped in the truck to wait until the blaze was burning strong. It was lighting up the sky along with the sun, as they rolled on toward Earl’s Farm.

They bickered as the miles disappeared. As they turned into the driveway of the Woods Farm, they saw Earl’s truck pull in behind them. At the far end, they could see another bus unloading reluctant relocated people. Jamil was herding them into the second Partition. It would now be completely full. Briggs told Earl to get started on a third but he didn’t. Said two, five-acre enclosures full of people working on the farm, were enough. It wasn’t lost on those people that the fence topped with barbed wire was designed to keep them in.

Course, those people were just out working the soil and pulling out dead dried up weeds and any errant new growth that by chance started at this time of year. Any new growth was destined to die with winter coming on but those little sprouts were trying by God. Earl watched Jamil getting people in and settled. He was turning out to be a good boy after all. All he needed was a kick in the pants and a firm hand guiding him.

Earl hesitated with his hand on the gearshift and foot on the brake, thinking about the task set before him. The manual farming of over a thousand acres was such a huge undertaking. None of those Jacks had any idea what it was going to take.
