ASTI SPUMANTE
This is another Italian sparkling wine that has had many crimes committed in its name but there are some good examples to be had. It’s made around the towns of Asti and Alba in Piedmont, always from the moscatel grape. Fruity rather than sugary-sweetish, softly sparkling and at a very gentle 5.5%-or-so abv, asti spumante is traditionally drunk chilled as an aperitif, though it goes well with fruity puddings too.
Similar things are made in other places – the Australians are particularly good at them and often make them pale pink and very girly, sweetish and low in alcohol but fun enough for a summery kick-off, especially if you pop a strawberry or raspberry into the bottom of the glass.
