There are many products available now that will do this job for you mechanically, but most are really just fancy variations on good old-fashioned home fixes. So save yourself $50 by trying the following simple tricks.

Jar-opening problems come in two main categories: an unbreakable seal and lack of a decent grip. Overcome these hurdles and you will never have to contemplate smashing a jar with a hammer again.

Break the Seal

Here are several tips that you can try when faced with a jar with an unbreakable seal.

Turn the jar upside down and hit the bottom several times with the heel of your hand to break the seal. Or, you can hit around the circumference of the jar lid with the end of a wooden spoon, handle of a butter knife, or similar blunt, heavy object.

Insert the blade of a sturdy butter knife under the edge of the lid. Do this several times in different places around the top of the jar until you hear a pop. You should now be able to open the jar with ease.

If the lid of the jar is made of metal, run it under hot water from the tap in order to expand the metal and loosen the lid.

If you won’t need to reseal the jar after you use it, puncture the lid with a sharp object to break the seal.

When resealing the jar, rub a few drops of oil around the edge to avoid a similar problem in the future.
