SIXTEEN
ALEXANDER GRIMSTEAD LOOKED down upon the damaged, lifeless body of his beloved Lilly as he held her. His own body was numb, save for the trembling in his legs. He could feel the trembling amplify, spreading out to the floor beneath him and the walls surrounding him. The underground temple of Goy Gothog was crumbling.
He knew this dream well. He had relived the wretched event in his sleep numerous times over the last year. This time, he felt as if he was an observer rather than a participant. He could see himself standing motionless in the subterranean temple. He knew that his heart ached to cradle Lilly in his arms and kiss what was left of her face, at the same time he prayed for a boulder to fall and crush his skull. But, as always, the massive, ebony hands of Algernon Colborne pulled him to safety while the ancient boulders fell.
âWe has got to go, Alexander!â Algernon said, as he always did. Grimstead knew that it was useless to struggle against Black Hercules, so he surrendered. Algernon threw Grimstead over his shoulder as if he was a rag doll and ran from the collapsing temple. Just as he always did. Except that, tonight, Grimstead found himself standing on top of a dilapidated building. Instead of being carried out into the harsh light of day, he was standing high above a dead city. His clothes were tattered and slowly burning away in the light. He looked skyward and saw a sun that was not only thousands of times larger than Earth's but it was also spreading directly towards him. He felt his skin being slowly burned away, then mended and burned again. Panicked, he looked to the wasteland of a city below and recognized it as New Atlantis. It no longer felt like a dream. Grimstead could feel his own skin blistering and smell his hair singing against his scalp. The city below him showed no sign of life. He suddenly knew he was the last living creature on Earth. Possibly in the entire universe. Grimstead became keenly aware that he was soon to join the others in extinction. He closed his eyes, but could still see the outline of the fallen city and the undulating tendrils of the supernova. The wind roared in his ears. His skin continued to burn, but now it would not heal. This was it. With outstretched arms he smiled and was destroyed.
