CHAPTER 50
(Astrid)
A Night not to Remember
The castle looked even more intimidating at night. I stood silent, my heart beating a mile a minute, watching Mike as he shone the beam of his flashlight on the stone walls and searched for a way in. Ringing the bell at the main gate had produced no response. Taking deep breaths, I tried to calm myself. I didnât want to go back inside the castle, but Rachel needed my help, so I had no choice.
âYou okay?â Mikeâs voice was little more than a whisper, but it traveled well through the darkness.
âIâm fine.â I lied, keeping my voice low too. âHave you found a way in yet?â
âYouâre not going to believe this but theyâve left a window open.â
âYou're kidding me.â
He shone the flashlight high on the wall. âLook up there.â And indeed, a small window one floor above us stood ajar.
I scratched my nose. âItâs too high for me to reach.â
âIâll climb up first, and then Iâll help you.â
My hand was trembling as I placed it on his arm. âAre you sure we should be doing this? It might be a trap.â
âYou want to find Rachel, donât you?â
âOf course, but ...â
âBut what? This is as good a way as any to get inside. Donât worry, Iâve done this many times.â He sat down, took off his boots and tied them by their laces to his belt.
âWhat if you fall?â
âI wonât. Take the flashlight and shine it on the wall just above my head.â
I shone the flashlight and watched in amazement as my cop boyfriend turned burglar scrambled noiselessly up the uneven castle wall faster than I thought possible. Of course, Angus and George would have swarmed up it more quickly, but then they were vampires. Or had been before they were shot. I took careful note of the hand and toeholds Mike chose, but considered most of them too tiny for me to use. I didnât have my manâs strength. Mike was soon struggling in through the window. His feet disappeared last and a few tense seconds passed before he leaned out again. âCome on,â he said. âIt wasnât so bad. Throw me the flashlight.â
I lobbed the flashlight and on the second attempt he caught it. He shone it down and I shrank back as it lit me up like an escaping prisoner in a searchlight. âClimb up on that rock first,â he instructed, pointing the beam at a sloping outcrop almost as tall as I was, part of the castle foundations.
âCanât you find a rope?â I hissed.
âWe donât have all night,â he hissed in reply. To underline his point the church bell began to strike the hour. I looked at my watch. Already eleven. And strange things were likely to happen in spooky moonlit Transylvanian castles at midnight, now just an hour away. We didnât have much time left so I began to climb. The first five feet were easy. I reached the top of the projecting rock, stood on the ledge it formed against the wall, and stretched up my arm.
