‘Mama,’ she heard, and felt Mina’s kiss on her cheek.

While they were eating dinner, Mina looked up from time 82to time at the flux of images on the television, with the volume turned off. ‘We read one of his stories in class,’ she said.

Her daughter’s words made her turn, and she saw a black-and-white photograph on the screen: the great writer in his youth.

‘What was the story about?’

‘A little bird that sings day and night before an eagle. It hopes the eagle will spare its life – that it won’t eat a bird that sings so beautifully.’

‘It sounds like a cheap version of the Arabian Nights. What happens at the end?’

‘The eagle eats it.’

She went and turned up the volume. Before moving on to the next news item, the reporter announced that the commemoration would be held the next day, and the funeral the day after.

She sat back down and stared at her daughter, who was ploughing through her meal.

She thought she ought to feel relieved.

But she didn’t.

Because she knew the world was full of great men who could grope and grab – and die in her arms tomorrow.
