Chapter Fourteen

Anna watched Levi lead Josiah away. She had no idea what he might want with Josiah, but the look on Levi’s face hadn’t been pleasant. She weaved through the crowd, following after the men. For some reason, she felt protective of Josiah. Perhaps it was because he was a newcomer to the village and he’d become a friend of her family. Or perhaps it was because Levi might seem a gentle man, but in truth, he was part of the village brigade that practiced warfare drills several times a week.

But she couldn’t think of what Levi might want with Josiah, especially after seeing him win the knife-throwing contest. Her stomach knotted at the thought of Josiah being a part of Levi’s group—she knew Levi, being a shepherd, was a lot more familiar with the land and the dangers out there.

Levi and Josiah had left the main crowd and were talking near a group of palm trees. Anna didn’t want to interfere with their conversation, so she paused in her step, remaining hidden on the other side of the trees.

Levi’s voice carried clearly to her as he said, “We are meeting tonight to assign the next month’s patrol.”

“I will be there,” Josiah responded.

Anna’s heart sank as she watched the men shake hands. She was about to return to the festival when Levi said, “Also, I have a message from Benjamin.”

Anna stilled and held her breath. What more could Levi ask of Josiah?

“He says that it’s not good for a widowed man to spend time with the women of our village,” Levi said. “Benjamin says that there is an understanding between you and one of his daughters.”

“There is no understanding—” Josiah began, but Levi raised his hand to stop him from continuing.

“I don’t need to know any particulars,” Levi said. “I am merely passing along the message that Benjamin is concerned, and he will not hesitate to invite you to leave if you mistreat his—”

“I have not mistreated anyone,” Josiah cut in. “Benjamin has welcomed me with generosity, but that doesn’t mean that I, in turn, will marry one of his daughters. I have not made any promises of doing so. I have simply been a polite neighbor.”

The vehemence in his voice echoed Anna’s emotions. How dare Benjamin force his way into Josiah’s life and decisions?

Levi looked taken aback. “This is not what Benjamin has told me.”

Josiah folded his arms. “I have always been a man of my word. I swear on my life.”

“All right, then,” Levi said, although his tone sounded distrustful. “Tonight, you can prove your loyalty to our village by joining the brigade. We’ll not have a man with your skill, scribe or not, sit at home while others are defending his life.”

“Are things so bad here?” Josiah asked.

“We’ve heard rumors the past two days that there have been a few skirmishes in Jerusalem,” Levi said. “We never dismiss such rumors. If thieves are driven out of the main city, they always end up in one of the smaller villages, seeking refuge.
