Brooding consumes a lot of precious time and depletes much of your emotional resources. As good as it sometimes feels in the short run, brooding hurts you in the long run. Just think of all the time you save and use more productively with limited, delayed brooding.
Disengaging from Brooding
One of human beingsâ greatest strengths is the ability to think. However, many times, they take their thoughts far too seriously, which leads to lots of trouble. People think that because a thought crosses their minds, the thought must represent reality. For example, right now, itâs a gorgeous day, sunny, 72 degrees and with a slight cool, breeze. But weâre stuck here in our office having to write. Weâre utterly miserable. How could we possibly be stupid enough to have signed a contract for yet another book? What are we, masochistic?
Wow! If we let ourselves get into those thoughts, we just might stop and walk away (which is not to say that we didnât have those thoughts â we did â but we also know that our moods and thoughts will likely change in a few minutes). In fact, our thoughts are changing right now because our writing at this moment is amusing us! Sometimes we think weâre even pretty funny. So maybe this gig isnât such a bad way to spend a nice day. Besides, we can take breaks anytime we want â and we get to wear sweats to work. Who has a job like that? Arenât we lucky? Yes!
Great. You see, thoughts are just thoughts. They come and go. They can take all kinds of interesting directions. Itâs even sort of fun to watch thoughts move from one place to another.
In this section, we explore some techniques for dealing with angry or disturbing thoughts â all of which help you disengage or distance yourself from your thoughts. For more ways to reexamine thoughts, check out Chapter 6.
