The man who called himself Ozzie stood in the doorway and watched the young woman stalk down the alley and disappear around the corner onto the avenue. Then he locked the door behind him, walked over to the guacamole-colored phone that hung on the wall by his workshop and picked up the receiver. Anyone looking at the phone would think it was an antique, with its spiral cord that dropped all the way to the floor and its faded push buttons. In reality, it was a sophisticated piece of electronic engineering that ensured all incoming and outgoing calls were scrambled, and that any conventional listening devices nearby were jammed. In short, anyone trying to intercept Ozzie’s calls would end up with nothing but static and gobbledygook for their troubles.

He dialed a number and waited. When the other party picked up, Ozzie said, “I have some information I think will interest you.”

He spoke for a minute or so. When he was done, the person on the other end of the line thanked him and hung up.

With that, Ozzie replaced the handset and went back to his work.
