Chapter 29

You need the Time Dogz. What was I thinking?

To be fair, the phrase had a certain ring to it.

I thought so, anyway. Sub-General Rutledge clearly didn’t. In fact, he decided I was of no further use and returned me to my accommodation beneath the Tower of London and the tender mercies of Inquisitor Contreras.

The following day it was back to the usual routine of being taken up for interrogation. It was a misty morning. A light rain coated the flesh of the victims of the WorldSoc inquisition tied to the courtyard poles.

“Lovely day for it,” I remarked to the inquisitor.

It wasn’t, of course. But I had learned that nothing pissed these people off more than cheerfulness.

“I couldn’t agree more,” the inquisitor replied.

No, that wasn’t right at all. What did she have to be so cheerful about?

The answer was waiting for me inside her interrogation tent. Half a squad of soldiers were there to escort me away.

“They won’t say where they’re taking you,” said the inquisitor, sounding far too happy about it. “But given the auspicious authority from which their orders were issued, it appears your ending shall be dramatic. Goodbye, Caldwell. We shan’t meet again.”

I’ve lived my whole life in the shadows. I’ve never been important. Never been dangerous. Sure, I’d had a handful of fights after too many beers, but I’d never been a threat to anyone.

I had to accept that this was no longer true because they used three armored troop carriers to take me away. Riding in the back with me were four soldiers with guns pointed at my chest. Four more were in a relaxed posture, but with weapons ready. They swapped roles every quarter of an hour.

Above us, I could hear unmanned gunships swooping overhead as they maintained air cover.

All of this, just for me.

So help me, I rather liked it.
