Artie tried to get Perle’s attention by waving a thick manila envelope in front of her face.

“Perle, wake up,” Allie hissed. “Artie has papers he needs to go over with you.”

Perle slowly opened her eyes.

“I’m awake, Allie. And it’s about time someone told me what any of this has to do with me, or with Miss Eustace, for that matter.”

“Jasmine’s real name was Samantha Eustace,” Artie explained. “And you might say she was kind of like your groupie. She read everything you wrote, listened to your tapes, followed your advice to the letter. She started having dizzy spells and memory lapses—turned out she had this incurable virus that attacks the nervous system. She died believing that you helped her maintain a quality of life she wouldn’t have had otherwise. See, her condition wasn’t diagnosed till it was way too late to do anything, but the treatments would’ve been worse than the disease, and she probably wouldn’t have lived much longer, anyway. Following your advice, she was active almost until the very end. The doctors couldn’t believe it—said it was a miracle.”
