CHAPTER THIRTEEN

A week later, there is much fanfare surrounding the arrival of their brand new car. Christine was going to buy one second hand at twenty grand because this car brand new, the premium version of it, which is what Mike had selected, costs over seventy thousand dollars. Getting it brand new feels like winning the lottery.

They all go to collect the car on Friday after school because Tania works Fridays, and also because the car dealer is open late. Vera insists on coming along because this is all happening ‘thanks to me’.

Zack is more than happy to pass on sports class to go and collect their new car.

When they get there, they marvel at and gush over the beauty of the car. It is a multi-passenger vehicle that seats eight people. No one has to be a contortionist to get into this car, especially when reaching for Carly’s suction machine and drool cloths.

Mike had picked metallic teal for the colour, which is perfect. Zack plays with the electric doors and tries to get his fingers jammed, which never happens because they are electric sensor doors that stop sliding close whenever there is an obstacle in the way.

Tania uninstalls Carly’s car seat and transfers it to the new car while Christine deals with the paperwork. She sees her name on the car registration form.

The car is mine. I actually own it, thinks Christine, not quite believing it.

The car is perfect. There would be no changes or additions required, Christine tells Steve, the manager at the dealership. They would have to install the wheelchair ramp, but a separate company would handle all that, and it would be funded by the government. It would be a few months before they would have the ramp, but at least they have the car now.

“Included with the car is free servicing for ten years, with extended warranty of three years on top of standard manufacturer’s warranty all paid for,” says Steve.

Christine is so overwhelmed she doesn’t fully take in everything he’s saying.

“Congratulations on your new car, Christine,” says Steve, extending his hand and standing up. His other hand is on his large belly. “I hope you enjoy it. Do let us know if there are any issues, and we’ll assist you the best we can.”

“Thank you so much, Steve. I love my new car. It’s perfect,” she says, shaking his hand.

Once everyone has piled into the car, Christine drives the car carefully out of the dealership, feeling very strange that she now suddenly owns it.

The handling of the car is actually really easy, even though it is almost three times the size of her hatchback. She looks into the rear view mirror to see Vera trailing behind them in the hatchback.

When they get home, they all inspect the car’s many features, expressing delight whenever a button performs an action.

“This is the best car ever!” Zack exclaims as he bounces up and down on his seat. “I have so many seats to choose from. I could sit here, or here, or lie down here!”
