Chapter Eleven

Considering the amount of times Trorm had gone tearing off in the draco-truck with no regard for the speed limit he really should have been pulled over before now. Not that he was pulling over, no matter what the flashing blue and red siren behind him legally demanded. There would be consequences for his refusal to obey the laws of the road later, potentially big ones considering he was here on a student visa.

None of which mattered right then because the Madden’s house was on fire. Just because he and Abigail didn’t technically live there any more didn’t mean that the house wasn’t important to him. The place had been home since he’d arrived in Aflana. More, it was where his friends and allies, Trisha and Lilian lived.

That the fire might be accidental never even crossed his mind. This was an attack on his allies, one brought about because of him. Again. Trorm would get there and he would end whoever dared threaten that home again.

He pulled off the highway, the police car right behind him, and ran a red light to swerve off into the subdivision that would bring him to the Madden’s house. The smoke was visible from blocks away. Trisha and Abigail clutched each other and made small sounds that mixed horror, sadness, and fury all into one.

Far too long later, Trorm brought the draco-truck to a screeching stop in the front yard, hopping the curb and tearing up the front lawn. Flames licked out the upper floor windows, sending a dark column of smoke rising up. In the distance Trorm heard sirens wailing, distinct from the police cruiser behind him. A fire truck was coming.

Gunshots rang out.

A flash of golden light shown through the smoke.

Lilian was inside, which meant she was fighting whoever had started the fire.

Trorm hurled himself out of the draco-truck, staff up, shield spell already in the casting, only to come up short as the police officer who’d been behind him came leapt out of the cruiser with his gun up. The face was familiar but Trorm couldn’t remember the name.

“Go get them!” the officer yelled as another flash of golden light shown and he spoke quickly into the walkie on his shoulder.

Trorm took off, one less weight pressing down on him. Backup was coming and they hadn’t thought that he was the bad guy. There’d only be one side shooting at him.

He burst in through the front door and bullets rained down on his shield from two different directions. With a roar, Trorm unleashed a bolt of chain lightning, blasting one of the shooters who’d been concealed behind a doorframe. The bolt leapt back from the body as it went rigid, arcing down the hall and into the stairs where the other shooter had positioned himself.

The first shooter fell to the floor, smoke curling from his blackened corpse. The other staggered, badly burned but still alive. Another gunshot roared and the burned shooter toppled down the stairs in a fountain of blood.
