Back on the road they met a recovery team from the airstrip and explained what had happened. After some discussion it was agreed that one of them would drive Guy and the airman to the hospital while Mac and Pavo continued to the airfield for their meeting.

Before they left, Pavo said to Mac, “Tell Guy I will commend him to his commanding officer for his extreme courage.”

Once Mac had translated Guy replied, “Thank him, but I don’t want him to. Anyone would have done the same.”

As they drove back to Podhumlje it seemed to Guy that the world had taken on a strange quality, like one of those new technicolour movies. The sky was an impossibly deep blue, the leaves of the citrus the glossiest green, the scent of wild rosemary as intense and alluring as the most expensive fragrance. Suddenly he wanted Ivka in his arms to experience it too. To kiss her and more… So much more… It was as though his basest and most primal instinct was telling him his survival had been hard-won and should not be wasted.

As the sharpness of his physical desire ebbed away, he felt thoroughly ashamed. At least four men had died back there, and the airman didn’t know how safely those who had managed to bail out had landed, because two more had jumped during the final descent. So many dead and injured, and all he could think about was sex with Ivka. Not even making love – just sex. Was he some sort of animal?

As Hugh was dressing his hands and feeding him sips of whisky, the multi-coloured lights of the world went out and Guy started to shiver and shake.

“Shock, old man. Perfectly normal. Bet you had an adrenalin high afterwards too.”

“You mean, seeing everything in technicolour?”

“Yes. Feeling like you could run a marathon in twenty minutes, wrestle a sabre-toothed tiger to the ground, and shag every woman in sight. All very basic, but that’s what adrenalin is about – makes your body ready to face danger and it always seems to create too damn much of it. Once I’ve finished this and you’ve stopped shaking, I promise you, you’ll go back to your tent and sleep like a baby until tomorrow morning.”

“No, I won’t. I’ve got work to do.”

“Doctor’s orders, I’m afraid. You were coughing your guts up from the smoke when you came in so you need to give your lungs a break. And although your hands aren’t too badly burnt they’ll be bloody useless for the next twenty-four hours because I’m going to have to bandage them to keep them clean, so there’s no way you’re getting on that motorbike of yours.”
