Remmy makes a deal with a scrap-metal dealer in the city to haul away his car which puts a few bucks in his pocket. He tells Bowie he wants to use some of the money to buy his big sister a birthday present. He talks a reluctant Bowie into accompanying him.

“We’re divorced, you know,” says Bowie. “I don’t have to buy her anything. Besides, she’s using my house for her birthday party.” (Sometimes Bowie forgets his intention to reconcile with his ex-wife. When he does, he refers to Garnet as she and her.)

“We are turning the page, Bowie,” Remmy says. “You and me. Becoming better people. Together. A new leaf.”

Remmy is now driving Bowie’s car, his beautiful silvery-gray late model Lexus. He’s managed this by promising to be Bowie’s chauffeur, available whenever Bowie needs a ride.

“Where are we going?’ Bowie asks him. “The mall?”

“We are going to the city. Second Chance Books. One thing I know about my sisters is that they love their books.”

“Too bad some of that didn’t rub off on you, Remmy.”

“What? I love to read.”

“You bet. The Daily Racing Form.”

“You are one mean old man. I haven’t bet on the horses since I got here.”

“So what are you betting on? Sports? Baseball? Tennis? What?”
