By connecting people’s roles to their long-term aspirations, you will be fostering engagement and motivation

Highly successful entertainment and real-estate company Decurion (owner of ArcLight cinemas) believes that people are much more capable than we often think they are (at least ten times!)—that each individual, no matter their level in a company, needs to be encouraged to grow. And this is not simply because it’s the progressive, ethical, and responsible thing to do, but because it’s good for business, too.

For this reason, Decurion is passionate about connecting an individual’s daily working tasks with their personal career development, and even their bigger life goals. They call these “touchpoints.” For instance, when one of the ArcLight “crew members” (cinema floor staff who take care of ticket sales and concession stands) stated that her long-term goal was to decorate film sets, her manager created a “touchpoint” to this goal in her current role by getting her involved in decoration for special events.

Interestingly, although this crew member’s long-term goal was not to rise through the ranks at ArcLight, her manager still gave her the opportunity to connect with that goal in her daily job. Why? Because Decurion believes that this kind of culture ultimately creates more-productive and engaged employees. If an employee believes that they can gain transferable skills in their job that will help them to pursue their dreams, then they are going to care about that job a whole lot more. In short, they will begin to see their role as more meaningful and beneficial.

Think about ways that you can connect your employees’ longterm goals to their daily job. How can you give them the opportunity to learn transferable skills that support their aspirations? Try to avoid seeing this as a nicety or an optional extra—it really is a concrete way to create a more motivated, engaged, and, ultimately, productive team.

Decurion believes in connecting personal growth to opportunities to contribute to the overall business. In doing so, everybody wins—team members are more satisfied, customers enjoy a much better experience, and the business thrives as a result. Touchpoints are an important Groove for helping to increase an employee’s Edge. And by encouraging team leaders to think about how they can connect people’s daily working tasks to their wider goals, Decurion have created a Home for this practice to thrive in.
