âI canât believe June insisted on staying home.â Lucy pushed her dark sunglasses farther up her nose, glad that Judah had trusted Melvin to stay with June and do the chores. He had mentioned that heâd not left her overnight since coming back from the service, but other than the occasional debilitating headache, June was more than capable. Maybe Judah was a tad overprotective. Lucy smiled. More than a tad.
âEven before her accident, she always loved being at home, sewing, cooking, gardening. Sheâs got the woman gene in spades.â Judah had gotten June to cut his hair and had left his hat at home. Dressed in designer jeans and a long-sleeved t-shirt that pulled tight across his shoulders, he could be a ski instructor or a sports star. He hadnât shaved for the last three days. He rocked the rugged look.
âThatâs sexist.â Lucy peered out the window of the limo Madison had sent for them, trying to cover the insecurity his words had caused with humor. Sheâd never be the homemaker wife that Judah desired. She looked over at Judahâs shocked face. Heâd not seen that she was joking. Smiling at him, she said, âIâm sorry. I know you didnât mean it that way.â
âOf course not. Plus, your bread is way better than hers.â
The irritation eased. Judah seemed to know what to say, what to do, to show he appreciated her efforts.
âThanks.â
The pig in the barnyard had somehow managed to chew up many rock-hard lumps of cooked dough, until Lucy had finally made the perfect loaves. But she didnât look like a homemaker in training today.
Madison had found a casual sweater-dress whose muted pink splashed in complementary abandon with Judahâs gray shirt. Yesterday she had gone to the hairdresser and had her hair re-dyed. Madison had also found a clip-on eyebrow ring.
Lucy had officially donned her âCelesteâ persona. And Celeste had a new man. Her phone buzzed, startling her. She laughed at Judahâs quizzical look. âIâm not used to having service anymore.â She looked down. Madison.
Send me the selfies as soon as you take them, please.
âWhat?â Judah pulled at his shirt and shifted in his seat.
âYour clothes donât fit?â
âItâs only for today. I can handle it.â
âMadison wants pictures.â Lucy shifted in her own seat, but her clothes werenât the problem. It actually felt empowering to be wearing clothes whose only function was to make her look sexy and feminine. Not that Judah had said anything or even seemed to notice. However, her uncomfortableness stemmed more from that fact that she couldnât slip into the acting role that seemed natural with Brock. Her feelings for Judah were real, and sheâd spent the last two weeks trying to hide them. To act as if she liked him wouldnât be pretending. So she actually had to pretend to pretend to like him. If that made sense. How did one do that naturally? It was awkward.
âLucy?â
She shifted to face him, glad for the protection of her glasses. âYes?â
He reached over and pulled the glasses off her face.
