Esther found the whole conversation about squirrels to be utterly ridiculous. The squirrels were taking Miss Keeneâs reticule because of the sweets that were tucked within. Fortunately, it appeared that Samuel thought as she did on the subject based upon his questions.
She decided it would be best if she moved the conversation past the devious squirrels. âIt is a lovely day, is it not?â She knew it was a lame attempt at making conversation, but it was the only thing that she could think of at the moment.
Miss Keene glanced up at the sky. âIt is quite nice,â she said. âI see a cloud that has a resemblance to an elephant.â
âNot a squirrel,â Samuel muttered under his breath.
Esther nudged his arm with her elbow to indicate he should keep his comments to himself.
In response, Samuel winked at her, causing a blush to form on her cheeks. How did such an innocent gesture on his part cause such a reaction in her? She just needed to remind herself that he was in love with another. Not her. She was foolish to develop feelings for him, no matter how small they were.
What had she been thinking when she had advised him to pursue his feelings for Lady Bedlington? But it had been the right thing to do. She suspected that Lady Bedlington still harbored feelings for Samuel, and it wouldnât be fair of her to not point that out.
Miss Keene kept staring at the sky as she held the side of her straw hat. Esther couldnât understand what was so fascinating about looking at the clouds. The sky was blue, the clouds were white⦠what else did one have to decipher?
Samuel spoke up. âDo you see any clouds that interest you?â
âI do not.â
He pointed at a cloud and said, âThat one looks like a boat.â
Esther strained her eyes but all she saw was a big, white blob of nothingness. âI do not see it, but I am not one to analyze clouds.â
âYou have never laid in a field and stared up at the clouds?â Samuel asked.
âI can think of nothing more boring,â she admitted.
Samuel grinned. âI think I finally found a flaw in you.â
âIt is not a flaw to have better things to do than to make up things that you see in the clouds,â Esther defended.
âJust try it,â Samuel encouraged.
Not wishing to disappoint him, Esther put her hand above her eyes to shield them from the sun and looked up at the sky.
He leaned closer to her and pointed at a cloud. âThat one looks like a heart, does it not?â
Samuel was so close to her that she could smell the scent of his shaving soap on his skin. She was trying not to become distracted by his nearness but it was proving to be impossible.
âIt almost looks like it has a crack in it,â Samuel said. âLook in the middle.â
Esther squinted and she could almost pretend that it looked like a heart. âIâm sorry. I just donât see it.â
She turned
