Khal-Jaek’s ship was small and sleek, just large enough to hold a small crew, though now it only held the two of them. To Ja’rynn, it seemed more like a planetary transport than a star hopper that could take the force necessary to travel at light speed.

“You sure this tiny thing is going to get us anywhere? I’d be surprised if it got us to the edge of the Nine Realms, much less the center of the galaxy.”

Khal-Jaek raised an eyebrow. Saying nothing, he pulled back on a lever and the ship blasted into light-speed.

“Fine, it's fast. But what about wormholes? I don’t know where Zmorg went, but he sure as hell didn’t stay within the Nine Realms.”

“Relax, Prince. This baby is smoother than your sweet, royal ass. It’ll get us anywhere we need to go. Trust me.”

“Fine, noted. Just get us to Zmorg and December.”

“That is the plan,” Khal-Jaek said, pressing buttons on his console.

“And never mention my ass again.”

“Someone’s in a touchy mood.”

Ja’rynn folded his arms over his chest and looked out the cockpit viewscreen. They were approaching a wormhole, and he had no idea where it led.

“Just where are we going?” he asked.

“To visit a friend.”

“A friend? You have friends?”

“I’ll try not to take offense at that.”

“Sorry, it’s just that I understood Luciverians to be solitary creatures who preferred to live apart from society. I didn’t know you made friends.”

“I suppose that’s true for most Luciverians, but I wasn’t raised that way. A family of Hothras took me in and raised me.”

“Why would they do that?”

“Luciverian fathers do not stay with their families. My mother left for a mission one day and didn’t come back. I assume she died. Left to fend for myself in a slum like the one I brought you to, a kind family took me in. They made me part of their clan of outcasts and vagabonds. Most of them were orphans as well. Or tossed away, either by their own families or the society that was supposed to protect them.

“I quickly learned Luciverians held a certain reputation, and I capitalized on it. Taught myself to fight. To kill when necessary. And even how to make friends. Like right now. We’re friends, right?”

Prince Ja’rynn scoffed. “We are not friends. Friendship is earned.”

“Really? Where I come from, friendship is given. Perhaps you’ve had the wrong sort of friends, Prince.”

Ja’rynn looked away and said nothing more.

“We’re going to meet a friend of mine. An auctioneer. She might give us a heads up on Zmorg’s whereabouts.”

“For your sake, you’d better hope she can.”

“If friendship is earned, Prince, you’re not doing a stellar job by threatening me.”

Ja’rynn grumbled, but didn’t respond and said nothing more as Khal-Jaek piloted the ship through the wormhole and into a neighboring system. Something was bothering him. He wasn’t usually this querulous. As a diplomat, he knew how to get along with anyone. Something about Khal-Jaek rubbed him the wrong way. And that camp of homeless refugees and outcasts. What had that
