The voice in the cage above Trina cackled uproariously. “Or I could jiggle you in an extra enticing way, like this!”

At that the tied rags started shaking. Up and down, back and forth, Trina's teeth were chattering from it. Her fingers were barely holding on as it was, but now they were starting to slip.

“Stop... it!” she cried, having a hard time focusing on the wildly moving world around her. The only thing she knew for sure was that the giant multi-legged insect hadn't gone away.

“Annnnnnd up!” the voice above said. Her fingers slipped to the absolute end of the rags, holding on to only the barest of threads as she was yanked skyward at an insane speed. She flew, spinning in the air, up toward the cage. She went up and up and until clawed fingers snatched her from the air and she was thrown down onto a smelly bed of straw, her head still spinning.

There was a clicking sound, followed by a swoosh and a crunch.

Trina looked up to see that the cage was filled completely by a beaked, feathered creature who was currently devouring the centipede. The thing was still twisting and curling in an attempt to break the grip of the talons that pierced its body, despite the fact that its head had already been eaten.

“You're an Ullu?” Trina asked.

Two enormous golden eyes turned to regard her, the snow white feathers of his owl-like face spreading out from them like a ballroom mask. He crunched up the remainder of the still squirming jahgapede and licked the end of his beak.

“Indeed,” he said. “I apologize for the forceful ascent. It gave me a better angle for snatching that tasty, tender morsel.

“But... but why are you here?” she asked. “Ullu are the-”

“Yes, yes. The wise guardians of the light. Hardworking, trustworthy and true, beyond even elves in their unending faithfulness and boundless sagacity,” he said in a mocking tone.

“Yes,” Trina replied. “Exactly.”

The Ullu bent down, eyeing her with one great golden iris. At her current size it hung over her like the sun, only far more menacing.

“Except for me,” he said. “I am not my kin.”

“You're dark!” she said.

The Ullu nodded his wide head. “Reken is the name,”

Her eyes narrowed. “What are you?”

“You can't tell?” he asked.

“No... You're not wearing any armor.”

“They would have taken it if I was.”

“True,” she replied.

“Or perhaps false,” he said, tilting his head. “Maybe my kin aren't really any different from humans. Just because we're a people who look like birds you humans associate with wisdom you think we're wise, but we're just as foolish as anyone else.”

That explained it.

“You're a fool!” she said. “I can't believe it... I've never actually met one.”

“And you still haven't, my dear.”

Trina frowned.

“I... for better or worse...” he said, pausing to stare at her deadpan, “am a Comedian.”

“What do you even do?” she asked.

“There is a long explanation for it, but let's just put it this way: I piss people off.”

“And you expect me to believe you can help me?”

“I expect you'll believe what you choose to, like most people do.
