CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Amy!”

I hear my name being called behind me and I swivel my head around. And then I see him, storming his way toward me, fists clenched at his side, face bright red.

Damn it. He looks like a fire-breathing dragon right now.

“Jason, uh, hi!” I stammer as he approaches.

“What the hell is going on here?” he asks when he has caught up with me. If I’m not mistaken, he’s breathing a little heavily and there are beads of sweat dotting his hairline. Wait, is the Great Jason Collins out of shape like the rest of us mere mortals?

“Are you okay?” I ask. “You’re breathing heavy.”

“Don’t change the subject, Amy,” Jason says through a series of ragged pants. “What happened here and how are you involved?”

“Jason!” I say with a nervous laugh. “What makes you think I’m involved?” I offer him a sunny smile I don’t feel. Oh who am I kidding? Jason probably knows exactly what happened and how I’m involved. He’s testing me, I bet. And if he’s not, do I really think I can keep this a secret from a member of law enforcement?

He crosses his arms over his chest and peers down his nose at me. “Because there are police and crime scene tape, and from what I’ve been told…” he jerks his head toward the barn entrance where the cops are still swarming, “...a murder. It reeks of Amy Maxwell.”

“Now wait just a minute,” I say, puffing out my chest. “That’s hurtful.”

“Well, hurtful or not, it’s true.” He leans toward me and stage whispers. “The cop at the entrance is a buddy of mine. He said you found the body.”

A sharp intake of air comes out like a gasp from my mouth.

“I don’t know what to say,” I stammer. Because I don’t. There is nothing to say that will get me out of this. I will never unsee the body of Libby Farrington on the toilet with a nail file sticking out of her neck. Oh crap, I’m gonna cry.

Jason starts to open his mouth and looks at me. “Oh geez, are you crying?”

“No,” I whimper, choking back tears. I feel a tap on my arm. Penny hands me a tissue. I take it gratefully.

Jason glances at Penny and then scowls at me. I can tell he’s fighting off the urge to grab my arm and drag me to the car kicking and screaming, but that definitely won’t bode well for his image. “Can we go now and talk in the car?” he practically hisses at me.

I glance over at Penny who makes no move to leave my side. “Um, yeah. Sure.”

Where’s your enthusiasm, Amy? A few minutes ago you were dying to leave.

“Good,” Jason says with a nod of his head and pivots on his heel before stomping toward the parking lot.

Okay, I guess this is my cue to follow obediently like a good little wife?

And then I recall, I’m not really Jason’s wife. That’s just an act for the reunion and the reunion is over.
