CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âAmy!â
I hear my name being called behind me and I swivel my head around. And then I see him, storming his way toward me, fists clenched at his side, face bright red.
Damn it. He looks like a fire-breathing dragon right now.
âJason, uh, hi!â I stammer as he approaches.
âWhat the hell is going on here?â he asks when he has caught up with me. If Iâm not mistaken, heâs breathing a little heavily and there are beads of sweat dotting his hairline. Wait, is the Great Jason Collins out of shape like the rest of us mere mortals?
âAre you okay?â I ask. âYouâre breathing heavy.â
âDonât change the subject, Amy,â Jason says through a series of ragged pants. âWhat happened here and how are you involved?â
âJason!â I say with a nervous laugh. âWhat makes you think Iâm involved?â I offer him a sunny smile I donât feel. Oh who am I kidding? Jason probably knows exactly what happened and how Iâm involved. Heâs testing me, I bet. And if heâs not, do I really think I can keep this a secret from a member of law enforcement?
He crosses his arms over his chest and peers down his nose at me. âBecause there are police and crime scene tape, and from what Iâve been toldâ¦â he jerks his head toward the barn entrance where the cops are still swarming, â...a murder. It reeks of Amy Maxwell.â
âNow wait just a minute,â I say, puffing out my chest. âThatâs hurtful.â
âWell, hurtful or not, itâs true.â He leans toward me and stage whispers. âThe cop at the entrance is a buddy of mine. He said you found the body.â
A sharp intake of air comes out like a gasp from my mouth.
âI donât know what to say,â I stammer. Because I donât. There is nothing to say that will get me out of this. I will never unsee the body of Libby Farrington on the toilet with a nail file sticking out of her neck. Oh crap, Iâm gonna cry.
Jason starts to open his mouth and looks at me. âOh geez, are you crying?â
âNo,â I whimper, choking back tears. I feel a tap on my arm. Penny hands me a tissue. I take it gratefully.
Jason glances at Penny and then scowls at me. I can tell heâs fighting off the urge to grab my arm and drag me to the car kicking and screaming, but that definitely wonât bode well for his image. âCan we go now and talk in the car?â he practically hisses at me.
I glance over at Penny who makes no move to leave my side. âUm, yeah. Sure.â
Whereâs your enthusiasm, Amy? A few minutes ago you were dying to leave.
âGood,â Jason says with a nod of his head and pivots on his heel before stomping toward the parking lot.
Okay, I guess this is my cue to follow obediently like a good little wife?
And then I recall, Iâm not really Jasonâs wife. Thatâs just an act for the reunion and the reunion is over.
