9: The truth

Adam sat on his bed with all kinds of thoughts running through his head. Primarily he had to see Elliot, just to know he was doing okay and also to ease his own guilt. Why did he go along with such a crazy plan? Now Elliot was locked below for a couple days and he had no way of getting him out.

Then it hit him. Adam possibly had the key to the bottom level all along in the breast pocket of his new uniform. The brass keys on the keychain that Eugene pulled from the shirt pocket. "Damn it."

"What's the matter?" Joe creaked the door opened and walked inside.

"Just worried about a friend."

"That boy that came looking for you that one night?"

"Yeah. His name's Elliot."

"Whatcha worried about?" Joe sat on his own bed opposite Adam's, hands on his knees.

"He's been locked below for a couple days and I'm worried. Wondering if he's okay."

"What's he below for? He wasn't the one fighting in the cafeteria days ago, was he?"

"That was him." Adam met Joe's eyes. "But no one knows he's my friend. And I want to keep it that way."

"Hey, that's your business." Joe raised both empty palms. "I won't go where I don't belong."

"Sorry."

"No, I get it. I'll give you some alone time." Joe stood to leave.

"Wait." Adam stood too. "You don't happen to have the keys to below so I can go see him, do you?"

Joe chuckled. "Man, you know only enforcers have keys. I haven't been lucky to get promoted yet. Check your uniform. You would probably know that if you wore it from time to time." He shook his head and left the room.

"Damn it." Adam sat and stared at the floor. Then he stood and paced between the two beds. Back and forth he walked. Finally, he decided to make a move and retrieved his black uniform, helmet, belt and boots. He tossed the bottle of brandy under his mattress and began to dress.
