WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Make sure the student isn’t attempting to “launch” the

attacker. Let gravity do the work. If their hips are lower than

the attacker’s the attacker will flip right over them.

Sweep This defense is done when a full nelson is being applied to stretch you up and back. Step your right foot to your right side and quickly pivot your hips so that your left foot can step behind the attacker, between their legs. Wrap your left hand over the attacker’s left shoulder and pop your hips forward and sit down pulling the attacker with you. Land on the attacker and immediately throw combatives.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR Make sure the student gets their foot around and behind quickly while staying tight to the attacker. They do not need to muscle the attacker down but simply pull on the shoulder, pop the hips and sit.

THROWS Shoulder throw

As the attacker punches apply bicep control and grab the extended arm’s wrist with your left hand (the attacker’s right in this example), step in with your right foot, spin your back towards the attacker as you grab the upper arm with your right arm and step with your left foot closely beside your right. Make sure that you have dropped your hips lower than the attacker’s hips. As you pull the attacker forward over your shoulder “pop” your hips. As they land keep hold of their arm and stomp ribs and face if needed.
