Chapter Fourteen

DIMITRI FINISHED BUTTONING his pants before snatching his shirt off the wood deck of his porch. “Well, at least we know why Tina is pushing Neal to behave the way he is. She’s being pressured herself from her own alpha.”

“Yeah, but as alpha, Neal should be better able to handle outside pressure,” Josh said, slipping his shirt over his head. “He’s allowing this Bane character to get his way, just so Neal can get laid. Not very good leadership.”

Dimitri shrugged. “Not like it hasn’t happened before. Now, we just need to decide what to do about it.” The fact that the Council had asked Neal Porter to leave Bull Creek told Dimitri how far the man had fallen, but would Neal remain and fight the decision? From what Dimitri overheard, it didn’t sound like that was the man’s plan, but how would he stand up to Bane’s pressure, especially considering Neal hadn’t been able to stand up to the man, so far?

“What’s there to do?” Josh asked, shooting his friend a puzzled look. “You’re the new alpha. Tina’s machinations won’t work on you, and therefore, Bane’s evil plot is over.”

Dimitri chuckled as he slipped his shirt over his head, pulling it down his slender torso. “You make our lives sound like a comic book plot. I don’t think it’ll be that easy, however. You heard what Bane said; he doesn’t want Neal to step down. Seems there may be some type of challenge now if I’m to do as the Paranormal Council wishes, and I don’t think that’s the best way to start out. Besides, I’m not sure Neal would be the only one I had to fight.”

Josh shrugged. “It’s how it happens in all tribes and packs when they don’t believe the person inheriting the role of alpha is up for the position or is a bad influence. It’s part of the cycle of leadership. You may not have a choice.”

Dimitri straightened his shirt as he stared out at the trees around the cabin. “I’d like to avoid a confrontation if possible.” He turned back to his friend. “Let’s hold off on talking to Neal just yet and get a better feel for the people here. It’d be nice to see where the other residents stood.”

Josh cocked his eyebrows as a smile pushed his cheeks up. “Do you mean..?”

Dimitri laughed, giving a shake of his head. “Yeah, let’s find the local watering hole around here and make nice first.”

Josh clapped his hands together, his grin growing. “Bring on the beer!”

Dimitri just shook his head as he headed for his truck. “You really should seek counseling about your obsession with drinking.”

“And ruin a good thing?” Josh feigned shock. “I can’t believe you’d want to break up my relationship with a cold lager. That’s just not nice. Rude even. Beer could just be my destined mate, and you want me to turn my back on such a relaxing brew. And here I thought we were friends.”

“Get in the truck, drunk.” Dimitri opened his truck door and slid behind the wheel and started his truck.
