16.

Mathilda was already laying on the couch when she heard Aaron enter the room. She opened her eyes and smiled as he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek.

“I heard it went well,” he said.

She nodded, then pulled him down on the couch and snuggled into his chest. “It was surprisingly less violent than I thought it would be. How did it go informing Neumann and Maier’s relatives of their new positions?”

“It took some time for me to convince them, but I’ve had dealings with both of them before, so that helped smooth things over. Their initial reactions were mostly shock, then of course concern. Deep concern. But once I told them we had security nearby waiting to protect them, they seemed a lot happier about what was going on.” He kissed her on the cheek and a smile curved his lips. “Congratulations Margravine.”

She nuzzled his neck and breathed in his comforting scent. “I’ve decided I’m going to be called Margrave instead. I don’t know why, but it just feels right. I suppose I view it as more of a military rank than anything, and they aren’t gendered. You don’t call people Captainess.”

“True. But I was so looking forward to being called Margrave,” he said, teasing her.

He was joking of course, but she had given the subject some thought. “It would be nice for you to have a title too. I don’t think people would want you to be called a Margrave, but maybe a baron? You’ll have to think of something.”

“God no. I wasn’t being serious.”

She looked up at him. “But it would be nice.”

He shook his head and wrapped his arms around her a little tighter. “How are you, truly? Taking on all those Margraves was a lot to deal with.”

She exhaled deeply. “I feel numb. I rehearsed everything again and again, so by the time I actually had to speak the words it was just automatic. But what about you? You’ve been flying from one end of the country to the other for months. I feel like I’ve barely seen you.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “The family business needed to be handled, and I was the best person for it.”

“If you hadn’t been able to keep everything running, none of this would have been possible.” She smiled coyly at him and kissed him on the cheek. “My savior.”

He grinned for a moment, but then became serious again. “We still haven’t cracked the codes and cyphers for everything else we found in the safe.”

“We’ll figure it out. And all those documents are so old they probably have very little to do with current pack business. I’m sure they’re interesting, but we can deal with it another day.”

“I know, it just worries me. It’s my job to protect you.”

She kissed him on the cheek. “Actually, I’m the pack leader. It’s my job to protect you.”

“I overheard a couple of the caterers chatting after the run. They said they didn’t mind having you around and they actually sounded hopeful.”

“That’s something I suppose.
