CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE MEN WHO’D BEEN holding Alf started toward Pleasance and the kids. She shoved them behind her. “Leave these kids alone. You’ve done enough to them.”

The man with the rifle laughed. “It’s entirely their own fault. All they had to do was tell me what I wanted to know and we wouldn’t have had to hurt ’em.”

Hani surged around Pleasance, his small face dark with anger. “You’re not stealin’ our tutu’s treasure, haole. It isn’t yours!”

Pleasance reached out and grabbed the boy’s arm before he could fling himself at the two approaching thugs. She respected his courage but thought he could use a bit of common sense. “Treasure?” She frowned, tugging the boy close and wrapping her arms protectively around him as Hani struggled to get free. “You tortured that poor child for treasure? What kind of monsters are you?”

The gunman narrowed his eyes, the only sign that she’d struck a nerve. But his wide mouth tipped up in a smile. “Rich monsters, I guess. At least we will be when these brats give up the location of that gold.”

He jerked his head toward the two men and they reached for Hani and Lei. The girl shrank back with a cry, crumpling to the ground and screaming like she was being eaten alive.

Pleasance pushed Hani toward his sister and stepped forward. “You don’t need these kids. They told me where it is. I’ll take you there.”

“You have the coin?” the gunman asked, clearly not buying it.

“No!” Hani surged back in her direction but one of the men grabbed him, jerking him off his feet. The boy cried out in pain.

Pleasance lost it. “Let him go!” She threw herself at the man and earned a cuff to the chin for her efforts. Her teeth clanked together and pain shot along her jaw. The salty taste of blood filled her mouth.

A bellow of rage erupted in the clearing and chaos ensued. Pleasance leapt on the man holding Hani, hitting him so hard he stumbled backward and went down with her on top of him.

Wood splintered above their heads but Pleasance barely noticed.

“You don’t hit children.” She punched the man in the face. He growled and backhanded her, sending her skimming over the muddy grass.

Her backpack fell off her shoulder and skidded across the dirt. Rage burned, turning her emotions dark. Without conscious thought, her hand slipped into the pack and came out with the kitchen knife. She threw herself toward the man, intending to bury the knife deep.

He rolled away from her.

Somebody shouted, “Down!” and Pleasance reacted instinctively. With a final look at the thug she’d been about to skewer, she grabbed Hani and Lei and bent over them as gunfire filled the clearing. The thug scrambled around the shed, looking for cover.

The leader of the band of thieves was on his back five yards away. He’d lost his rifle and was fighting a desperate battle with an enraged Alf, who’d seriously lost his mind.

Several of the thieves dove behind the dirt bikes and were firing into the rainforest.
