Watcher’s assistant closed the book and lifted it from the table. He turned to Watcher, who was busy painting, frowned at her, and then hitched the book under his arm. He crossed the room, passing the storeroom, sinks and hat rack, and approached the front door. He opened it, stepped through to the corridor outside, and then closed the door behind him.

He locked the door with his key and then placed it in his pocket, for safekeeping.

He took the elevator down to the ground floor and exited the tower. Without wasting a moment, he crossed the courtyard, shielding the book from the rain with his oversized muslin shirt.

He entered Collector's tower and took the elevator up to the penthouse suite. After a moment's hesitation, he forced a faux smile to his lips and knocked on the door. It opened.

Collector's assistant reciprocated with a fake smile of her own and reached out for the book.

He handed it over and opened his mouth to talk, but stopped before uttering a single word. Instead, he kissed his fingertips and touched her face with them.

She smiled sincerely and blushed. She then stepped back into the room, clutching the book under her arm. She closed the door behind her and locked it. She lifted off from the floor and flew to the middle of the room, with the grace of a hummingbird. She laid the book down on the plinth beside Collector.

Collector, emaciated and blind like Watcher, turned to acknowledge her assistant. She placed her paintbrush down on the easel beside her and reached for the book. Finding it, she stroked the leather bindings with her brittle fingers and exhaled. She then patted the book gently and sighed with relief.
