“Where are they?” Zoe asked for the third time.

The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over The Fortress. It would have been beautiful, especially from the vantage point at the top of the barricade. But Zoe couldn’t appreciate it. Not when her stomach felt sick with worry. Their friends should have been back by now. She suspected that they would stay the night at the manor, and head back to The Fortress first thing. If they’d done as planned, they should have been back hours ago.

And they should definitely be back by now.

It was times like this when Zoe missed her mobile phone. How much easier this would all be, how much less worry it would cause, if she could just contact Patrick (or Fletcher; Patrick had always been notoriously bad on his phone). If she could just know that they were alive, whatever had happened. Because something must have happened out there to stop them coming home. Something hadn’t gone to plan.

The rational voice in Zoe’s mind told her that they were strong, they were more than capable of looking after themselves. Patrick may have been awful on his phone, but he was never late. He’d never been late for work, or any of their dates. It was one of the qualities that Zoe liked most about him, as well as the care he showed each of his patients. He was dependable. He never made her question whether he cared. He just showed up, time and time again. If he said he was going to do something, he would be there without fail.

And that’s what worried Zoe.

Zoe felt she’d done her best at The Fortress, staying mostly upbeat and keeping herself busy. Refusing to think about those that had left on the trip. Charlie might have called her bluff, but she’d been strong for Sadie. She’d put on her best nursing smile and charm when she checked on Freddie. And it had been this one glimmer of hope - knowing that they would be home soon - that she’d clung to.

“Why don’t you try to get some sleep?” Charlie suggested gently. “What’s that saying? ‘A watched pot never boils’?”

Zoe appreciated his kindness. But she shook her head. “I don’t think whether they come home has anything to do with whether I’m here or asleep.”

“I know that. I just don’t know if it’s wise for you to wait up for them all night.”

“It’s my turn on watch,” Zoe said. Though she’d agreed to this hoping that they would already be home.

But there was no sign of them.

“I can take over,” Charlie offered. “We don’t need two of us here.”

“It’s okay. I’d rather be here. You can get some rest, though.”

“I’ll keep you company.” Charlie shot her a look. “If that’s alright?”

Zoe nodded. The pair fell into quiet, both watching their surroundings descend into the darkness of night. It was still, barely more than a breeze whistling through the alleys.

“They won’t travel in the dark,” Charlie said after a while.
