Chapter Eighteen

The adrenaline began to fade from her body and the pain from the injuries inflicted on her was more sharp now. Martin struggled to walk as every move required the power functions of her suit, which had been damaged in the fighting. It pressed harder into the wounds with each step.

It would, of course, be one of the problems she intended to bring up with the developers. She didn’t think it would make much difference, though. In her experience, bringing the problems up with her superiors and writing them into post-action reports would do very little for the people who headed into the Zoo now. Sure, the folks who designed and built the damn things would take the criticism to heart and immediately improve the next version. On the downside, though, the government would not implement those changes themselves. The only way she and her fellow soldiers would ever see any changes was if they managed to have their suits altered and improved by the mechanics who made their money on the various bases.

She had met a couple of the people who did that for a living. Most of them worked independently and relied on the work that came their way with the Hammerheads and other vehicles that needed repairs—which, in fairness, was rather constant. They were generally former military themselves, from one country or another, and all had decided they would probably make more money for themselves that way. Of course, it also came with the added bonus that they didn’t need to head into the Zoo on a regular basis and deal with all the shit that came with that.

Said shit, she reminded herself, which now apparently included highly trained and well-armed mercs who slaughtered people after saving them from a mass animal attack. The saving part was purely accidental, she realized that now. It had simply been one of those bizarre encounters, and if her team hadn’t literally barreled into them with the entire Zoo along for the ride, they would most likely not have involved themselves at all.

Her first order of business would be to get out of there alive and somewhat intact. After that, she would focus on the bastards who killed her team.

Thankfully, she had been able to save some of the data she'd picked up when she joined their comm line, which she would pass on to some specialists on the French base to help her to identify who these bastards were. When they did, she would return the favor with a whole fucking battalion of her people in the French Foreign Legion. You didn't fuck with the FFL and not be annihilated for it.

Martin paused for a moment to catch her breath, leaned on one of the trees, and sucked oxygen in to ease her lungs which literally ached from the exertion. She didn't have too much time to rest, given that she really had no idea if the mercs intended to pursue her. They had mentioned that they planned to
