Chapter Fourteen

#xa0;

When Grace had gotten the call that morning, she’d thought Milo was doing it to piss her off. For once, the group had nothing to do. No interviews, no publicity. Instead, a nice, relaxing day. But she should have known better. She should have known that once Milo had received that black envelope, it would all go to hell.

As soon as she pulled up to the house, she realized that the two-story log home was on fire. He’s dead, she thought, and I’ll never see him again. She hit the steering wheel hard with her hands. Zig had warned her after all.

But then he rounded the corner just as she got out of the car, pulling a limping Zach with him. They looked as if they’d been through hell, covered in leaves, dirt and mud. The two must have jumped from a window.

She wanted to scream. To shout the thousands of questions she had going through her mind. Instead, she took out her cell phone and pressed Will’s number. He was the only one who’d know how to deal with it. The press pulled up with the fire truck, so someone must have known the house was Milo’s when they’d called nine-one-one. Because it sure as hell hadn’t been her.

“Will?” she said as the other Knox brother answered the phone.

“Whatever it is, I told you you’re on your own. That’s what happens when you let my niece visit her psychopath of a mother in prison.”

“This is important.”

“Unless someone’s dead or bleeding—”

“There’s a fire, you fucking asshole.”

Will paused, not saying anything for a long time. Long enough that it made her stomach knot. “Where?” It came out almost a whisper, as if he was afraid of asking the question.

Grace stared at the house, which was now burning merrily. “Seattle. Some place in Seattle. Do you need the address?”

“No. No, I know exactly where you’re at. I’ll be there soon,” he said. “You’re not to talk to anyone. But if you have to, you’re going to tell them it was a party that got out of control.”

“Zach and Milo were the only ones there.”

“God damn it. What the hell were they doing?”

“I don’t know. Milo said something about confronting his past ghosts. We got into a fight about how I was dealing with my past and—”

“Christ, you’re screwing, aren’t you?”

Grace bit the inside of her cheek. Then, finally, replied, “That’s not what’s important. What’s important right now is that two members of the Waywards have jumped from a burning building. We need to figure something out. You’ll come, won’t you?”

“I’ll come. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Don’t do anything stupid. Actually, don’t do anything.”

“Right. Right.” She disconnected the call.

Finally, she turned to face the boys. She walked over to Zach and patted him on the shoulder as a group of firemen rushed by with a hose. “You okay?”

“Leg hurts,” he hissed, trying to stand up without pulling Milo down.

There came the sound of a second set of sirens, and an ambulance pulling in.
