Chapter 19

Hands Off That Backside

"I brought you something to eat. Chris told me that you skipped breakfast," Thalia breezes into my office with a tray in hand.

"Thanks, Mum," I smile at her and reach for the spinach pie.

Oh, this is heaven. With my mouth still full, I motion Thalia to sit down. We haven't had the chance to talk for a week now. Ever since the bookshop's reopening and I may get daily reports on the bistro's profit, but this isn't enough.

"Where's Paulie?" I ask, looking around.

Thalia laughs and I focus on her as I reach for another piece. "Chris has taken him to the park, or it was the other way around, I'm not very sure."

I laugh hard at that as I gulp down my food. Paulie may not be a spoilt child, but he's certainly willful. I've come to love the little one very much, especially since Zac is now a more active presence in his life.

"And how are you? I hear that you are already a success around here. Before long, people from all over Greece will come to taste your pies."

"Why not from all over Europe?" Thalia snorts and I shake my head at her. "Seriously though, I'm very good. I'm thinking of hiring some people to help me with the workload. I know that only a week has passed since we started, but I already have orders for the rest of the month."

"That's great news, Thalia. Just let me know If you need anything."

My phone rings and I pick it up mouthing ‘Sorry' at her for the interruption. As I'm conversing with the manager of a mystery writer for an upcoming event, I note that Thalia seems different. It’s like she has actually spent some time pampering herself.

I finish the call and make a note of the event on the calendar when it comes to me.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"When was the last time you went out for a drink?"

Thalia stares at me dumbfounded. Is she shocked or is she actually counting?

"Honestly? I can't remember. These past two years have been very rough for me with Jason's death and raising a child with absolutely no idea how to do so and no help whatsoever."

Just as I thought.

"Okay. Just one more thing. How much do you trust Zac?"
