Chapter Eleven
âWell, that was another bust.â
Rhys glanced up from his tablet as Logan joined him at the table of a restaurant theyâd decided to try.
âSo the curator wasnât a love match?â
She wrinkled her nose. âThe curator? We went out a week ago. And, no, we didnât hit it off.â
âMy apologies.â He was starting to have trouble keeping track of all of her dates. Thereâd been the wine and cheese guy. Then the artist and the curator. He was pretty sure sheâd mentioned a graduate student, but who could keep up? âSo, who was the bust?â
âThe baker.â She let out a sigh so mournful he couldnât help but grin. âI really wanted that one to work out.â
âSo you could get all the free pastries you could ever want?â
Her lips twitched. âI mean, that would have been a perk for sure.â
He clucked his tongue in mock judgment. Actually, it really wasnât a bad idea. Heâd spent a small fortune on croissants and other baked goods in the past few years. Dating a baker would free up a lot of his budget. Maybe Logan was onto something with this finding a French significant other idea.
The fact that he was even considering the possibility was a level of terrifying on par with a masked man jumping out of the bushes with a chainsaw.
Clearing his throat, he topped off both of their wine glasses.
âSo what happened with the baker?â
âThe date started off well enough.â She took a sip of the rosé and grinned. âOoh! This one might be the front runner.â
âItâs pretty good.â He gave her a pointed look and prompted her. âThe date started off well enough . . .â
She lifted a shoulder. âAnd then it didnât.â
âHow so?â
âI guess there wasnât much chemistry. The whole date I just felt like I was a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Wishing heâd get me a baguette.â
Rhys snorted. âDid you ever get it?â
âYeah, but it was only okay. Anyway, I donât really want to talk about it.â
Leaning back in his chair, Rhys studied her. It was unlike Logan to keep mum on any subject. Let alone one of her dates. Of course, that was before the incident.
Theyâd almost kissed. Almost being the key word. They hadnât. But they both knew it almost had. Neither of them had brought it up then or later. At first, heâd figured it was a fluke theyâd get over. Then, as more time passed and the mood around them had changed, it seemed too late to broach the subject.
Besides, it could never happen again. Not as long as she didnât know the truth about how theyâd met. And if it was too late to talk about the almost kiss, it was definitely too late to say, âOh hey, by the way, I once dated your sister and she asked me to check in on you.â
Rather than belabor either subjectâthe kiss that hadnât happened and the date that floppedâRhys changed it entirely.
âHowâs your food checklist going?â
âIâm not making much progress at all.
