Keying the mic, Marc yelled "On my way!" hoping the response would make the attackers think twice. He let the cart go and started moving quickly, unslinging the tactical shotgun, pumping a round in the chamber. He could see from eighty yards they were about to steal an ATV. He fired a shot in the air, and yelled, "Move away now or I will shoot." He had to get forty metres closer before a shotgun would be effective, worse yet if he fired the shotgun he would hit Rosie. The shotgun got their attention. As it turned out just, long enough for Rosie to deliver an undefended kick in the groin to the one who was trying to get her off the ATV. He doubled up and stepped back. The other guy dithered while Marc gained another ten metres. The uninjured one got his wits back and realized it was a shotgun and Marc could not shoot without hitting the girl. He came up behind Rosie and grabbed her around the neck. In that time Marc gained another ten metres.

"Stay back or I will hurt the girl, we are taking the quads and the girl." Marc slung the shotgun, which the assailant mistook as a sign of acquiescence and climbed on the ATV behind Rosie with his arm still around her neck. Marc kept moving forward. The other attacker was recovering a bit now. Rosie continued to fight the guy, trying to get out of his grasp.

Marc worked the distance down to twenty metres. The wounded assailant was trying to get on the other ATV. Marc drew the handgun and aimed at the guy with the sore balls. "Get away from my bike or I will blow your brains out," Marc said still walking closer.

"Stay back or I will break this bitch's neck!" the other one yelled. Marc fired a shot at the other one. Marc was walking and hadn't had any recent practice with a handgun, The shot missed but scared the guy enough that he hopped off the ATV and ran. The one with Rosie also got off the bike and pulled her with him, he put her between Marc and himself. "I swear, I'm gonna kill her," he repeated.

Rosie was half gagging as he pulled her off the ATV. Panicking as she choked, she dug her nails into his arm trying to get some air. Releasing her a little allowed her to draw in air, breathing again she remembered one thing Alderson had taught her about self-defence. The top of the foot was fragile. She stomped once, then raised her foot and stomped again, her foot followed his shin down to the soft bones on the top of the foot. There was a crunching sound as the bones gave way.

Howling in pain, he let go completely, and tried to hobble away. Rosie turned and drove her foot into his groin, then punched him square in the nose. He dropped to the pavement like a sack of howling, mewling rice.
