As the foregoing piece implies, for a long time most science fiction, especially American—not all, even then, but most—was provincial, its characters overwhelmingly Anglo-Saxon and its tomorrows very like the authors’ surroundings except for bigger and flashier technology. We’ve learned better now, though I suspect that soon our present-day conventions, such as a world ruled by heartless multinational corporations, will look equally quaint. The diversity of humankind is a wonderful and life-giving aspect of the diversity of the cosmos. We cannot foresee what will come of it; we can only try to imagine, knowing that our creations won’t have much if anything to do with what actually comes to pass.

I have also suggested that as other cultures adopt modern scientific technology, they will not thereby become mere copies of the West. Certainly that has been the case so far. Traditions, whole ways of living, thinking, and feeling, have enduring strength. They can survive, sometimes underground, to rise anew after centuries. It could happen beyond Earth, too. With that in mind, I have attempted to write a N play of the future.
