Chapter Ten

Puppies!

Lulu whined from the makeshift bed Andrew made for her and her puppies in his large shower as he got dressed for dinner. “What do you want?”

She had a bowl of food, fresh water, and a comfy bed in a big box. What else could she need? How did this happen? He went from having no dogs to having four in the blink of an eye.

Lulu followed him to the kitchen as he grabbed the bag of kibble they’d picked up at the store. He poured more out for her. She looked at it, took a sniff, then backed up and barked at him again. “Hey, beggars can’t be choosers.”

She barked in protest and whined.

He took out his phone and called Naomi. “She won’t stop whining.”

“Did you feed her?”

“Yes. She won’t touch it. Apparently, she’s picky.”

“Pour a little olive oil on it,” Naomi said.

“Seriously?” He took the olive oil out of the cabinet and poured some on top of the kibble. “Well, look at that,” he said with surprise as Lulu devoured the food.

“Works every time. You heading over soon?”

“Yep, soon as princess here finishes eating and doing her business.”

“Great, I’ll see you soon.”

He closed his phone and stared at it for a moment, already dreading having to let it go. Naomi was only back in his life for a nanosecond and already everything was changing. Lulu barked at him as if to emphasize the point. “You ready to go outside?”

She ran toward the door, her little tail wagging. He waited while she finished then put her in the bathroom with her puppies and shut the door. He felt a twinge at leaving them alone, but he couldn’t miss the rehearsal dinner. Besides, he needed to talk to Paige and waylay her fears about his business.

He drove to the hotel and walked into the restaurant. Everyone was already at the table, including Carrie and Ryan and their adorable little girl. The meal was terrific, and so was the company. They made final arrangements for the wedding to take place at sunset the next evening. After that they’d all be leaving. Andrew would miss them.

All of them, but especially Naomi.

She looked at him and smiled.

“Would you like to dance?” he asked her as he finished his dessert.

“Sure.”

He followed her to the dance floor then wrapped his arms around her waist.

She twined her arms around his neck as they swayed to the music. “How are the puppies?”

“Little squirming fur balls.”

“They are so cute.”

“It’s their mother who is a pain in the you-know-what.”

“Hey, she has three mouths to feed.”

“And I now have four new ones.”

She grinned. “I’ve been reading up on how to take care of them. Tomorrow we need to go shopping and buy some supplies.”

He scowled. She tightened her grip, moving closer to him. “Are you kidding? I’m only going to have them a few weeks.”

“It will be fun.”

“If you say so.” It was on the tip of his tongue to remind her she was leaving soon, too soon, and he’d be the one left caring for the little fur balls.
