Perfect summer nights turned to working heat-filled days, though the imprint of Aidan’s lips still lingered. As did the memory of Dan and Mason crossing the diner parking lot moments after Aidan and I had parted. Our kiss became our secret. I liked having a secret if it meant sharing it with someone. Sharing it with Aidan.

That was new. I had a lot to obsessively think over while I worked today.

On schedule for the Independence Day holiday, I stayed a few extra minutes in the break room before my shift, admiring the food spread. My coworkers knew how to Potluck with a capital P.

Joe held open the break room door for Kara. “I’m just saying, the kids here have an edge.” Joe made eye contact with me. “What’s up, Lila? We were just talking about you.”

I grabbed a star-spangled napkin matching the frosting on a patriotic cake. “You were?”

Kara tsked at Joe. “Don’t cause trouble.”

Joe slid into a seat across from me. “You’re going for the bonus money, right?”

I nodded.

“You know what the other kids are doing?”

“By kids, do you mean Mason, Dan, and Aidan? Because all of them are interested in the bonus money.”

“Joe’s old, Lila,” said Kara. “Anybody younger than him is a kid.”

“Hush, Kara. You’re old, too.” The two of them laughed.

The guys hadn’t revealed clues about their own proposals. “Nobody is discussing details. At least not with me. What have you heard?”

Joe sat back. “Dang. I was hoping you would tell me.”

Kara laughed at Joe from across the kitchen. “Struck out!”

Joe looked back at me. “All I know is, Daddy needs a new deck.”

“You know you can’t build a whole deck for what they’re giving out,” Kara fired back. “Especially after taxes.”

He gave her an indiscernible look. “Let a man, dream, alright?” He shot up from his seat and loaded a plate from the potluck buffet.

This was about to get seriously competitive. I needed to bring everything I had to this project or I wouldn’t stand a chance. Since my idea would cost money over bringing savings, I needed to create a vision. A vision where more money could be made after changes and investment in the business itself.

Out on the floor, I found the golf range packed. I barely had time to think the next two hours. Scratch that—I had thoughts. First, a beach with a crisp, cool breeze off the ocean as I read a stack of library books. Then my mind drifted to a foot massage and one of those fancy umbrella drinks. The drink could be Kool-Aid and Sprite, I didn’t care, but the little paper umbrella was vital. Aidan materialized in a beach chair beside me, talking about dragon factions.

“Lila?”

“Huh?” Oh. It was actual Aidan beside me. I’d spaced out, leaning against a support pillar in a recently cleaned golf bay.

We hadn’t talked about our kiss yet. I glanced to either side checking for eavesdroppers.
