Madrall focussed back on Soreea, in the present. “It is in his best interests to keep us on his side,” he replied. “However, his intentions were pure. If House Niakrex feels as he does, then we’ll at least have somewhere to start.”

“We need House Sonaya to back us with these new designs. Without them, we won’t have the resources.”

“It will take much more than House Sonaya. We’re not just building a fleet of Ras fighters going against the Zefron.” Madrall paused, letting her hand drop, and he spread his own hands as wide as he could. “These ships are bigger than any city we’ve ever built. Bigger than anything conceived before. I only—”

“What?” Soreea asked.

“I only hope that we have time.” His head fell. “This is a tight schedule even for us.”

“It is going to be tight for everyone.”

Madrall brought her back to him in a strong embrace. “I’ve had my closest men working with the engineers from House Sonaya constantly from when Valor first asked. Resources are only just stretching to supply the workforce and build the ships. Not only do we need each other, but without it, we’re all doomed.”

“Then let us pray that we may all put aside our differences for the greater good.”

“We have no choice. I must bring all our fighters back. We protect the planet only. No time for recon anymore.”

“But the search for the Tromai?”

“Lost. We must prepare to leave this planet. Survival of our species is much more important than history chasing.”

Soreea nodded, but Madrall knew she felt differently; her thoughts were his thoughts, her feelings very much a part of him.

“You have a proposal?” she asked.

“I do, but I fear no one will like it. Protection loaned out to both House Magalite and Sonaya will be withdrawn. All resources that can be dismantled will be. That includes most of their Ras, and we’ll have new specs for the fleet fighters. They’re going into production as we speak.”

“Without final word from Kendro?”

“I feel it necessary to show commitment, without all the talk.”

“We’ll be all right,” Soreea said. “Kendro is not his father—he is proving that already. You can see that, right?”

“Yes, I am well aware of their differences. I remember some of Kendro’s public charades when he was younger.” Madrall chuckled at the memory. “I know Mika will not only guide him, but guide us too.”

Soreea smiled, kissing his cheek. “Our niece is pure in heart and spirit, not easily bade aside.”

“No, she will be there tomorrow. Where Valor failed his queen, Mika will rise above her station and fight for everyone.”
