CASSIE WELCOMED THE mind numbing cotton fog that had taken over her mind after the onslaught of tears was over.

She sat in Robyn’s office, while Robyn took the chair next to her. She’d brought over a box of tissues and Cassie wasn’t even aware of reaching for them, but there was a damp, crumbled up ball clenched tightly in her hand.

“Robyn, I have a confession.” The computer voice was matter of fact, a toneless inflection. Cassie barely heard him—barely cared to listen.

“Go ahead, Leo,” Robyn said softly.

“It was I who created Landon.”

That caught her attention. Her gaze whisked to Robyn, whose expression was frozen as she stared upward in the vicinity of the ceiling.

“Explain, please,” Robyn said, her voice just as soft as before, not belaying her curiosity at all.

“Milo had become my friend. And with the bride program beginning, I thought perhaps I could have a shot at trying to live in a human existence, too. Like him. The skeletal frame that housed Landon originally belonged to the Serena-bot, though I added modifications. It was locked in storage in the cryopreserve facilities. When Milo was in medbay testing for the possibility of fixing his flight, I took samples of his cells to develop a skin for the body. Unfortunately, the project grew beyond my control. It got out of hand and there was no one I could turn to for help.”

“Leo,” Robyn whispered.

What the hell did all of this mean? None of what the computer said made any sense. “Wait,” Cassie choked. “Are you telling me Landon isn’t—wasn’t—real?”

“He was real, Cassie. He is real. He is...me. However, I was not prepared for the human experience of feeling. I was bombarded with emotion from the first day I inserted a portion of my consciousness into the body. The love I felt for you. The guilt I felt for hurting Milo. The jealousy that someone might find out I wasn’t good enough to reproduce because my body wasn’t natural, it was created. The hatred I felt toward myself because I wasn’t human and wanted to be like everyone else. But then I realized I didn’t want to be after all. It was a learning experience and I hurt many by it.”

The computer was crazy. Everyone she’d met knew Landon. Countless people talked to him when they’d run into others on their date. Hell, when she was with Milo, she remembered Lily mentioning Landon.

“How did you get the Xeno Sapiens to all know Landon?” Robyn asked. That was exactly what Cassie had been thinking.

“They are still housed with their computer chip. I added a program of dreams that blurred with their reality regarding memories.”

Xeno Sapiens had computer chips? “Leo, I want you to write into your programming that you will never again access the Xeno Sapien’s micro processors without each individual’s and my express permission.”

“Are you sure? I can always delete those memories of Landon from the database—”

“No, Leo.” Robyn’s voice was firm. “You must never, ever violate their memories again. Delete your access.
