Chapter 14
Tahrin stood at his bedroom window, watching the sun set over the mountains in a blast of oranges and pinks. He glanced over his shoulder briefly to check on Skylar and smiled to see her still sleeping. But when he returned his gaze to the sunset, he couldnât ignore the compulsion to turn around and watch his new mate as she lay sleeping.
He spun quickly and stared at her, wondering if it was the newness of their mating union that caused him to feel so drawn to her. His blood heated and his pulse quickened at the mere sight of her, and his tongue vibrated with the urge to whisper her name just for the simple pleasure of saying it aloud.
âSkylar.â
Her eyelids fluttered in her sleep, making him think she must be dreaming. He sincerely hoped the dreams were pleasant, and he couldnât help but wonder if he featured in them. Perhaps in sleep she was recalling the hours theyâd spent mating, the numerous times heâd claimed her, kissed her, and cradled her in a tender embrace.
Even now, after a full day spent in her presence, he ached to gather her onto his lap and hold her. He wanted to feel her soft breaths tickling his chest as he stroked his fingers through her silken locks.
The doorbell rang and Skylar stirred. He strode to her, then leaned down to place a kiss on her cheek. âGo back to sleep, little human. Itâs just a friend of mine who is here to drop something off.â
She sighed and nodded before turning over on her pillow, finding a more comfortable position underneath the covers. He supposed she was exhausted after a day spent mating. Theyâd only taken a few quick breaks for eating and bathing.
Once she settled back into sleep, he hurried downstairs and opened the front door. His friend, Stax, who was a renowned healer and scientist among their people, stood on the doorstep holding a small package. Relief filled Tahrin that his friend had brought the item he required so quickly.
âOld friend,â Tahrin said with a nod.
Stax gave a deep nod of his own and handed over the package. âAdmiral Tahrin. Might I offer you congratulations on your new mating union. May the Star God bestow your marriage to Skylar with many blessings.â
âThank you.â Tahrin held up the package. âAnd thank you for bringing me another dose of nanobots.â All warriors were given one dose of nanobots for their future mates, but Tahrin had used his one dose on Alessandra. Thankfully, Stax had had enough extra doses to bring him one for Skylar. He intended to inject her with the healing nanobots without delay. The need to keep her safe prevailed above all other thoughts.
âOf course,â Stax said. âI am happy I could help. We have recently increased the rate of production in the lab, and weâll soon have enough extra nanobot doses that weâll be able to start injecting human females as soon as they arrive on New Vaxx, even before they choose mates or visit Vaxxlian Matchmakers.
