MOUNTAINTOP MEETING

Ella

I was leaning against the cave’s sharp wall when Marco came back into the crystal cave. The healers had already left. The Zua didn’t have so many healers that they could afford to leave two with me, even if Marco had been the one to call them.

Marco said, “Come on. We’re ready.”

He extended a hand to me and pulled me to my feet. I was less than two inches away from his body, and I tilted up my face to look into his eyes.

There was a moment of total silence as I was close enough to feel his body heat.

But the moment passed, and he wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

“I should probably stick close to make sure you don’t trip in the tunnels. It’s a good upward hike.”

I thought that he was just trying to stick close to me, but I quickly changed my mind. We walked up and up and up inside of the tunnels. I began to wheeze.

“Where are we going?” I panted, after I could no longer pretend that I was breathing normally.

“The highest part of the mountain.”

No wonder I couldn’t breathe.

I was about to ask Marco to stop when he knocked lightly on a wall.

“What are you...”

But I never finished my sentence, because the cave wall slid to the side. We walked into a secret meeting room.

One side of the meeting room looked like glass.

I turned to Marco. “Wouldn’t they notice a huge glass-paneled room at the top of the mountain?”

Someone at the table snorted.

“That’s why it’s shielded. Do you think that we’re amateurs?”

I blushed hard. I definitely got off on the wrong foot.

Maria was sitting on the far side of the table, so I went to sit next to her.

“Where’s Kel?” I asked softly. Maria cared about my Baskrit, but she was nowhere to be seen.

“Kel is in the kitchen, running around, chasing mice. The cooks are keeping an eye on her.”

I smiled. She must be having the time of her life in there. After being terrified in the Temple that they would try to poison her food, I was relieved that I could pretty much let her eat whatever she wanted here inside of the mountain.

I looked through the panel.

“The beam lights are on,” Maria said.

I frowned. “Yes, they are.”

“They’re obviously preparing for something,” Barrett noted.

“Yeah. They only turn them on when there’s a threat to the Temple.”

“No test runs?” Marco asked.

“No,” Maria confirmed. “They only turn them on if there’s an imminent threat. They send around a physical copy of information collected about a real threat. It always circulates throughout the Temple.”

“Do you think that it’s about us?” Barrett asked.

“If it is, we’re not going to have any other option besides war if the Temple wants to strike us. We thought that they’d try to lure Ella out, but if they want to come inside the mountain and take her, then we’ll have to fight back.”

I saw Maria look at Marco with fear in her eyes. She was shaking a little bit.
