12 Not Staying Put

Daisy

Whatever’s going on, Queen Cassandra will network with Meiko and Aiko to coordinate a battle strategy. Shame fills my chest as I realize that I’m the only one not jumping into the battle. The cold hard fact is, I’ve got no fight left in me. I’d be more of a distraction or the weak link in the chain if I went to the bridge. Also, two women on the bridge is a bit of a crowd, but three is a disaster in the making. We’d be tripping over each other and the warriors wouldn’t know who to listen to. The twins are highly motivated and seem to enjoy a good fight.

I grudgingly admit that we’re all better off with me leaving them to it. Still, I feel a little useless sitting around wringing my hands in my lap like a helpless victim when there’s danger about.

Though Darnok made it abundantly clear that I’m not supposed to go out of the room, doing absolutely nothing during an emergency seems imprudent. Surely there is something I can do to help when the ship’s being attacked. After pacing around for a bit, I decide to sneak down to the hatchery. The males will be running a skeleton crew and likely in need of an extra set of hands.

I unlock the door easily, since the system is set for females to override every command that a male codes into it. They think just because we’re women, we’re trustworthy. I’m not sure that’s true. I head out into the hallway and it’s a freaking ghost town. Swallowing thickly, I realize whatever the emergency is, it’s taking every available warrior to handle. Up until now, they’ve never left us alone, particularly when there is any level of danger. I make my way across the ship, wondering about what kind of threat would be significant enough to draw every abled-bodied male to the front lines of this battle.

I jump onto a lift and drop down two floors to the hatchery. When the lift aligns with the floor, I see through the glass that total chaos is reigning on that entire floor. When the door opens, I rush into the main room. Valden steps out to meet me. “You have come to help with the little ones, have you not?”

“Yeah, what the heck is going on?”

“We are under attack by an unknown enemy vessel. Queen Cassandra believes that having so many queens on board is drawing the notice of every pirate and unsavory character in the area.”

I can see the hatchery and yell to be heard over the chaos. “What can I do to help?”

There is silence for a brief second as he snags a really young hatchling from the air and tucks the little one under one arm. He squeals and flails his wings, trying to escape. I reach out and pluck the babe from his grasp and hold his tiny face up to mine. He goes perfectly still and I realize it’s because I’m a queen in his little eyes.
