CHAPTER TWELVE

Sarah

I wake up, uncomfortable thanks to whatever lumpy object is digging into my back. At first I don’t remember the attack. I’m confused and disoriented, thinking something is on my bed. I reach behind and discover that the uncomfortable mattress is really the hard ground littered with twigs and branches that have fallen from the alien trees.

It isn’t long before the horrors of the previous day crash over me and I remember the fighter jets.

Tessa! Tessa is there and Vorek won’t let me go save her.

This is even worse than when the Krinar landed on earth because I was just a kid then and didn’t really understand what was going on. I’m all grown up now, and I have a very active imagination so I’ve run down numerous scenarios by this point and none of them are good.

I glance over and catch Vorek’s intent gaze. No doubt he was watching me sleep, something he openly admits to doing. He says it’s because he requires less sleep than I do, but doesn’t want to leave my side. We are almost nose-to-nose, but the breathing masks keep us from touching.

The sight of his mask reminds me of how little oxygen we have left. I can’t help but wonder what’s going to become of us with almost no food or air supply. My empty stomach rumbles, letting me know that it didn’t appreciate the tiny dinner rations. I choose to ignore it and take a drink from my bottle of water instead.

Hunger and I are old friends. I know that I can exist on very little food because I’ve done it before. I know what it is to have to choose between putting food in my mouth and paying the rent, I just never thought I’d have to use the skills again. My time with Vorek has made me forget what my life used to be. It has made me soft. But I will toughen up again quickly. I will do whatever I need to in order to survive long enough to get back to the base to help my friend.

Vorek still hasn’t said anything, but I can tell by his expression that he’s thinking hard about something. I have a fairly good idea what it is, but I hope I’m wrong. Yesterday, Vorek wanted to take off his mask so that he could be all noble and give me his remaining air supply. Sometimes I don’t think he gets me at all. Does he really think I’d be happy to sit there and watch him die, poisoned by some unknown toxin in the air? And besides, if he dies I don’t expect to last much longer.

“I was waiting for you to wake up,” Vorek says tenderly.

I look at him and try to smile, but I only manage an awkward grimace.

“I know you don’t want me to do this, but I’m taking off my mask to test the air.”

“No! You can’t do that. You promised!”

“Sarah, you know that I never promised. We’re running out of time, and we have to know if it’s possible to breathe this air or not.
