Chapter Eight
They spent most of the day going over their plans for the heist. Working with a team would prove interesting. Makl usually performed alone, but he couldn’t deny he wanted to do this, in spite of the delay to the errand for his aunt. The idea of spending more time with Olivia should have set off warning alarms; instead, he enjoyed every jibe she threw his way, every smirk she bestowed, each heated glance when she thought him not paying attention.
It seemed he wasn’t the only one who couldn’t forget the explosive sex of the previous day. He also wasn’t the only one fighting not to succumb again, a fight he knew they’d lose by the way the air fairly sizzled around them.
At the end of the day, as fatigue claimed her, or so he judged by her yawns, he broached it. “It occurs to me –”
“Hold the presses, purple has an idea.”
“You know, if your tongue feels such a need to exercise then I have something you can use it on.” He grabbed his crotch and waggled it at her.
She made a face. “Eeew! Oh, how gross.”
Offended, he blurted the first thing that came to mind. “That’s not what you thought yesterday.”
“That was then. This is now. I had an urge, you were handy. I’m good now so you can stop trying to get into my pants. It isn’t happening again.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. Despite what you think, you’re not irresistible. You scratched your itch. I scratched mine. It was okay. Kind of quick, though, to tell the truth. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I want to get some sleep. Alone.”
Off she strode to his room, buttocks wiggling, without a backwards glance. But she’d made one fatal mistake. She’d insulted and challenged him, thus invoking two mercenary rules. He couldn’t let this go unanswered. He stalked after her, entering his room just moments after her. She whirled to face him and held up a hand.
“Stop right there, purple. I meant what I said about sleeping alone.”
“It’s my bed. If you don’t like it, then you can find other accommodations.”
“I’m your guest, which means I get dibs.”
“No, we’re currently partners, which means what’s mine is mine.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It doesn’t have to. I’m sleeping in this bed. Right now. Whether you choose to join me or not, is up to you.”
“So you’d relegate me to the floor? That’s not very gentlemanly.”
“Who ever said I was gentle?”
She scowled. “Fine. We’ll share. But no funny business.”
“I didn’t hear you laughing last time we were in it attending to business. As I recall, you spent that time trying to catch your breath and relegating me to deity status, or so your yelling indicated at the time.”
“You are unbelievably arrogant.”
“It isn’t arrogant to be truthful. I gave you great pleasure.”
“So what, I didn’t contribute?”
He pretended to think about it, tapping his chin. “Actually, other than spreading your thighs and screaming, not really. I did all the work.”
Her mouth gaped open. “You son of a bitch. You just called me a bad lay.
